Patient Cohort Discovery is a HIPAA compliant web application which leverages structured as well as unstructured data in a data warehouse to automatically screen patients for clinical trials protocols.

Success of a clinical trial recruitment process for drug discovery and new treatments depends on screening and identifying eligible patients in a timely manner. This can be a complex and tedious process that in many instances requires a research nurse to manually track patients that may be eligible for a study. With the use of Patient Cohort Discovery application interface, a researcher can enter a set of inclusion/exclusion criteria pertinent to a research protocol and instantly find patients that may qualify for the clinical trial/study. PCD leverages the comprehensive collection of patient data in a data warehouse. Patients can be screened based upon structured data elements as well as the contents of clinical narrative text (e.g., discharge summaries, notes, etc.).
PCD’s interface is designed to be intuitive for all levels of users. The data elements are organized into six query templates (demographics, diagnosis, laboratory tests, procedures, medications, and text reports), and presented in a familiar, eligibility checklist format. The query templates are sufficiently flexible to express complex criteria. Results from the query can be drilled down to view the entire medical history of the patient, from appointment details to lab values, diagnosis, procedures to free text in the dictated reports.

Patient recruitment is crucial to the success of clinical trials, however, manually screening patients for the trials
is a laborious and time consuming process making it difficult to find patients eligible for a trial. By automating
the screening criteria provided by the protocol, PCD increases the efficiency of these processes making it an effective tool for identifying patients qualified for clinical trials.
